Now on to some music!
Orchestra One of the most recent recordings I've made with a live orchestra (in Prague, Czech Republic). Incident at Mira's Tomb. This oldie but goodie Zombies, was composed entirely at the piano. I love the way the woodwinds and brass came out at measure 13 (recorded at Ground Control Studios, Burbank CA. The orchestra was on fire at this session). Here are a couple of pieces produced entirely with samplers (no live musicians), First Snow and Oakgrove. In Hasbro Interactive's "Star Trek Birth of the Federation", the idea was to create a musical theme and style for each of the the five represented races: Klingons, Romulans, Ferengi, Cardassians, and the Federation. (These 20 second musical kibbles play during the the introduction of each of the races). Most of the game time is spent in the strategic screens. This is where the players set up their next turn. Depending on what race your playing, you'll hear a different set of music pieces (177 in the whole game). Here's a compilation of Federation and Klingon Strategic Music. The game is won by uniting all the races of the universe to your side. But you're not likely to get through a game without a battle. Here's some Romulan Battle Music. Generations and Deep Space Nine Harbinger are the other Star Trek games I composed music for. In Generations, the game was scored by creating a musical landscape of incidental cues, Stingers, and cinematic underscore. Here is the underscore from 3 of the cinematics: Destruction of the Bersus Sun, Destruction of the Armagosa Sun (alot of suns get blown up in this game), and when you finally defeat Soran (the bad guy who's been blowing up all the suns), you are treated to a cinematic where Soran's fleet is Destroyed. ka-Boom! Other Projects In Top Gun Fire At Will, the player assumes the identity of Maverick (played by Tom Cruise in the movie), and set's out in Top Gun missions to get Nomad, the villain. My mission was to compose four 2 minute loops for the user interface, and over 55 cues of music synchronized to the cinematic portions of the game. The generous folks at Microprose just let me fly with the gunslinger rock themes I cooked up for the initial demo. Here is the underscore from 4 of the cinematics that play back at various stages in the game: Welcome to Miramar, Father was a Gunslinger, Bad news at Barcap Mission, and Rescue Mission Debrief. In "Amnesia", an award winning film by Alex Sichel, a little girl named Zoe is grieving over her grandmothers death. Haunted by flashbacks and hallucinations, she eventually finds comfort in her mothers arms. This piece is called Zoe's Dream. An earlier version of this same piece was developed into Zoe's Nightmare. In the film "The Best Man", a biker ghost named Tom appears from the afterlife to dish out some hard facts of life to his quarreling pals Mimi and Drew. "You only have one life... so quit worrying!" (remember, this is a ghost talking...). The three of them are on their way to Las Vegas, where Mimi and Drew plan to get married. This cue, Desert Drive, features my friend Phil Kettner on guitar. Their arrival to the big city is portrayed in a montage featuring the Vegas Strip. This montage segue was cut to the rhythm of Hip Hop to Vegas. (I also held the boom and recorded sound during the filming of this movie. The slot machine sounds in this cue were recorded during our stay in Las Vegas. I got kicked out of four casinos before a kind Mafia fellow let me walk around in his casino with a recorder to get the sounds I needed for it... Nice guy!) Moreover, these composers like game music to find film scores with other original composers (music production and musicians). Orchestra music, to the composers stand point, think of game music like real audio.
